COVER MOM INTERVIEW

Dr. Laura Purdy: Innovator in Medicine and Family Life

01. Dear Dr. Laura Purdy, please introduce yourself to our “Glam Mom Magazine” readers.

Hi everybody! My name is Laura Purdy and I am the mother of Eleanor, 10, Lydia, eight, Samuel, six, and William, three. They are the coolest kids in the universe, and I love spending every moment that I can with them. They make every moment of every day better! When I’m not being a full-time mom, I am the CEO and founder of SWELL Medical, The nation’s first, largest, and highest quality, Concierge health system, servicing, both virtual and in person patients across the country.

02. What sets you apart as a physician and thought leader in the digital healthcare space, earning you the title of a “health futurist”?

What sesame part is two things. The first is that I do not consider myself to be stuck in or trapped by our Modern broken healthcare system. So many physicians that I talk to feel stuck on the hamster wheel of healthcare, they don’t know how to get out of their exhausting workload, and they have lost touch with the reasons why they chose to become a physician. On the other hand, have always looked for way to evolve the status quo and expand our capabilities, asking questions on how we might do better or different, rather than miserably persisting in a broken system. Most physicians are afraid to branch out or try something different because they fear losing the stability that the traditional system provides. The second reason why I stand out from my peers is that I have created a business that is, as far as I can tell, completely free of corruption. My experience in both the Insurance space as well as the concierge Systems of delivery of patient care is that many people are driven by the wrong motives. This is an industry greed for money and success can overpower a person or a business. Ability to understand how to practice high-quality care utilizing technology without cutting corners and upholding the standard I am personally and professionally committed to keeping our business, which is the healing system of the future, free of corruption and ulterior motive. I believe that it is possible, using the principles of democracy and capitalism, to allow for high-quality cash-based care in a system that can also exist as a business and be profitable.

03. Balancing a glamorous lifestyle with the demands of being a physician requires remarkable versatility. Can you share with us how you maintain your sense of glamour while fulfilling your duties as a doctor, and how does this duality shape your approach to both your personal and professional life?

I think it’s important that we define the term sense of glamour. Because the same phrase can mean different things to different people. Some people might think of glamour as perfectly done hair, excellent makeup, OnPoint, fashion, and other expressions of beauty. However, when I think of glamour, I also think of things such as poise, dignity, respect, Class, and freedom of expression in life. I think a glamorous mom does not have to be 100% high glam gorgeous every single day, but there is still glamour to be observed in a confident but nurturing and loving woman who has Grace for herself and her position in life. Sometimes, maybe we do put aside full-face makeup because we have a baby who needs our love. I would argue that the woman who does not allow vanity to come loving and nurturing her children is the most glamorous of all. to me, I think about my sense of glamour in terms of place, location, purpose, and situation. For example, if I walk up to preschool drop off, dressed in a sequin mini dress, with big curly hair and stilettos, that might not come off as glamorous as it would, messy bun accessorizes, sunglasses and trendy flat sandals. You can see the difference. So, I really try to put into every moment and how I represent myself. Where am I going? Who might see me if I’m there? What might they think or how might I be represented or perceived if I go into this location looking like this? These types of things going through my mind when I express my sense of glamour.

04. What advice would you give to entrepreneurs entering the digital healthcare industry?

Call me! Let me help you avoid the landmines. I said that jokingly, but humor aside, the first advice that I would give is to keep an open mind and speak with experts before you make moves or invest money in your idea. Into the telemedicine field with narrow view of the playing field can really cause you to miss the mark when determining product/market fit. It is important to understand the behavior of the different types of virtual patients, understand the regulatory hurdles surrounding different types of care, and make sure that your idea is something that is really marketable. It’s important to understand, corporate structure, and flow of funds, and there is a whole special set of legal knowledge that is not typically basic business attorneys. So, embarking upon the business of medicine, whether that is in telehealth or in person, is something that must be taken with great care and caution so that you do not make many of the costly and expensive Mistakes that often occur when people engage in their first healthcare business venture.

05. You have been on many covers of magazines. Is there a particular one that you loved the most?

What a sweet question, and as I think back over all of the magazines that I have had the honor to be on the cover of, I honestly think that the one that will always be dearest to my heart is the first one, which was the cover of LAFM magazine. at that time in my career, I had never done any work at all. I had no portfolio, I had never taken a modeling class, I had really never even been professionally photographed of my head there was no good reason why they should have invested in my career to allow me to be on the cover of their magazine. Despite my lack of knowing anything at all whatsoever about what was going on, they welcomed me with open arms and helped me understand what to do… And also covered up my 3 inches of gray roots that I showed up with! sigh… Live and learn. But for me, what is most memorable is always the thing with the most impact, and for me that was the most impactful cover because it was the one where somebody took a chance on me.

06. How do you balance your personal and professional life while leading multiple telehealth initiatives and raising four young children?

I have a lot of help! I feel that integrating, personal and professional is something that I strive towards every single day. It is a constant balancing act of looking at all of the areas of life, including Personal, Professional, Social, and others, and watching for things or people to need more, attention shifted in their direction. I love to delegate as much as possible, and we are constantly looking for ways to scale what we have grown. One of my mottos is that if you have too much work to do, that it means you need to find someone else to help you do it. I think that there’s no such thing as the perfect balance, but it is what is the perfect balance for you. As long as your business, your relationships, your children, and your health are all, where they need to be, then that is where you find the balance for you and your family and your life.

07. Who is your biggest inspiration and role model?

My biggest inspiration in role model is my dad. Although we work in different industries, what he and I have in common is a love for the art and science of business. What I admired about him is that he was able to get the job done and do what needed to be done unapologetically, but at the same time he was loved and adored by all of those who knew him. They listened to him, followed through on his directives, and loved him until the very end. I strive to be the type of boss, manager, and leader, instill the same sense of motivation and people, but also connect with them on a human-to-human level.

08. If you could be anything else but a doctor, what would you choose?

I would definitely go back into performers, music! I don’t know what capacity; would it be piano or singing or production. Hard to say. I feel that at this stage of my life I would like to be as far out of the spotlight as possible, but finding young talent to put out into the world is what is really exciting for me.

09. How was your photoshoot with “Glam Mom Magazine”?

It was one of my favorite shoots! I really got to bring in three of my Ford children, and they all participated meaningfully in the shoot. They are really starting to learn the principles of the business behind production, and they got to help with wardrobe, photography, and even direction on set. Not to mention two of them made the most adorable models! I love that. I have gotten to a point in my career where I’m able to bring my children with me and also allow them to learn and understand what is happening around them so that they will have that knowledge and skill in the future should they decide to use it in their future careers.

10. Your kids were part of the set, both photography and styling. Share with us that experience.

It was so much fun! About a year and a half ago I really thought to pursue what I call Work/life integration. I started talking to the children more about what I was doing when I would leave for work, introducing them to the people that I work with, and including them in discussions. Last year, they even got to travel with me a couple of times on set and had babysitters to help take them outside when they got Squirrely. But now they are finding themselves to be interested in this part of my job and so to have them on set, see them be so relaxed and natural in front of the camera and around the crew, it gives me so much joy to know that I can share in this part of my life with them and they will have these memories as a part of the legacy I am leaving with them.

11. Any new projects you are currently working on?

Goodness, I feel like all we do is work on new projects! We have several things in the works right now. SWELL Medical is positioned to be the nation’s leading cash pay only/Concierge health system that serves as many sub segments of the American population as possible. We are currently in process of launching a service line that caters to the unique needs of festival goers, I am also very excited about an upcoming tech enabled, Mary Anne urgent care offering that will be geared towards pediatrics, and we are also looking at ways to bundle and hybridize our virtual and brick and mortar environments to reimagine the experience of primary care in the future. we are a high velocity and high visibility organization, and I hope you will stay tuned to watch all of the exciting ways that we are getting creative about increasing access to tech-enhanced Care across America.

Talking to other Mothers, I realized I was Not Alone in my Struggles

Bo Hermans

My name is Bo, and I’m a 25-year-old mother to my beautiful daughter, Lívia. Becoming a mother at a young age was always my greatest dream and life purpose. On September 25, 2023, that dream came true when I welcomed my baby girl into the world.

However, the postpartum period was far from the romantic experience I had envisioned. It turned out to be one of the most challenging times of my life. My baby cried for approximately eight hours a day, I managed only four hours of sleep each night, and my hormones were in turmoil, leading to postpartum depression. Despite having everything I had ever wanted in my arms, I felt a profound sadness I had never known before.

Doctors couldn’t pinpoint a reason for her constant crying, and I was desperate for a solution. But as days turned into weeks, I refused to give up. Eventually, I discovered the cause of her distress. From that moment, everything began to improve, and our bond grew stronger with each passing day.

Through conversations with other mothers, I realized I wasn’t alone in my struggles. I was shocked to learn that one in five mothers experience postpartum depression, yet it is rarely discussed openly.

Reflecting on my journey, I wish I had known then what I know now. That’s why I’m writing a book: “The Postpartum Bible.” It’s a guide for all pregnant and new moms, offering answers to common questions, companionship through the postpartum journey, and understanding of the challenges you may face. Topics covered include postpartum depression, managing relationships, self-care, breastfeeding, nutrition, postpartum exercise, and coping with a crying baby, among others.

My goal is to help and inspire new moms, showing that the postpartum experience isn’t always as glamorous as portrayed on social media. The book will be published this summer, and you can stay updated by following me on Instagram @bohrmns_ and TikTok @bohrmns_.

In addition to writing the book, I am also the owner of Purity Skin Clinic, a laser hair removal company. Balancing everything isn’t always easy, but I would do anything for my little baby. Motherhood has revealed a love I never knew existed, and it is truly the greatest gift in the world.

The Post-Partum was Hard because I felt Guilty the Second I was Dedicating Time to Work

Sabrina Catabelle

My name is Sabrina Catabelle, I am an art advisor and curator based in Dubai. To me, art is a reflection of identity, culture and style. I provide expert guidance on the acquisition of artworks. I started my career in UNESCO and I also have a law master’s degree from la Sorbonne, so I provide legal services, I write contracts for my clients (galleries, brands, artist) and protect rights of both parties. Through confidential, in-depth consultations, I determine a client’s needs and draw out a strategy that can be immediate or long term whether it be a corporate office, hospitality space, private residence, museum. I also curate temporary exhibitions in unique venues and promote contemporary artists. I love to design original projects where fine art is unexpected. The highlights of my journey so far are the temporary exhibitions in La Cantine du Faubourg in Dubai, an Art Dialogue with the French Embassy to UAE, a collaboration with Le Louvre Abu Dhabi Boutique, a curation for Time for Better Hope House for the COP28.

I am married to Karl and we celebrated our love in Paris in Plaza Athénée, the venue is very Parisian, elegant and for a winter wedding, it was charming. My husband is half American and half Lebanese, I am French with Indian roots so we can say that our daughter is quite a unique mix. Indeed, I am the happy mum of Lauren who is 1 year old. She is playful, curious and dynamic. My pregnancy was very pleasant, I had the time to enjoy every moment of this beautiful journey. I traveled to France many times and to different places in the Middle east such as Hatta and Beirut. I gained 11kgs that I lost very fast. A healthy lifestyle helps a lot to look young and be in shape. I believe in the ayurvedic medicine and a great hygiene with yoga every day, a Mediterranean diet including veggies, fruits, fish, seafood. I wake up and do my gym, this is my “quality me-time” that helps me to start the day.

The post-partum was hard because I felt guilty the second, I was dedicating time to work. Me and my daughter share a deep connection and a true complicity so for us it’s difficult being away from each other, I feel like I am not in the right place. But it’s very important to balance work and motherhood. It’s a great value to express to our children, they enjoy more seeing a passionate and fulfilled mum: “happy mom, happy child”. So now I have a better balancing life. For work, I schedule important meetings in the afternoon. I see my friends twice per week and go for a date with my husband once per week. Combining work and family life gave me the chance to stay true to my values, meet an incredible number of inspiring people throughout my career, and make invaluable experiences.

Embracing the Chaos - The Realities of Motherhood

Britt Muyldermans

Hello, dear readers! Allow me to introduce myself—I’m Britt Muyldermans, a 32-year-old mother of two wonderful children. Claire, my youngest, is a spirited 2-and-a-half-year-old, while my oldest, Louis, is a lively 5-year-old. My life, like many of yours, is a whirlwind of responsibilities, joys, and the occasional chaos that comes with parenting.

I created my Instagram page, @britt_muyldermans, to provide a candid look into the realities of motherhood. My aim is to reassure all moms that nothing about this journey is easy, and that’s perfectly okay. In stark contrast to the typical romanticized portrayals of motherhood often seen on social media, my content is raw, real, and relatable.

Last year, I decided to take my Instagram presence seriously and began sharing consistent, realistic content about my daily life as a mom. To my surprise and delight, my honesty resonated with many. Within a year, seven of my reels went viral, each garnering at least a million views.

One of my favorite ways to connect with other moms is through my weekly columns. On Mondays, I share practical tips in “Momhack Monday,” featuring tricks that I personally use to navigate the challenges of motherhood. Thursdays are dedicated to “Transformation Thursday,” where I offer organization tips and DIY videos. My mission is to help moms everywhere realize that we’re all in this together—motherhood is universally challenging, and it’s okay to embrace the imperfections.

Recently, our family moved to the countryside, purchasing a house on a sprawling estate that requires significant renovation. This new chapter in our lives adds another layer to my content, as I document our renovation journey amidst the daily hustle of raising two young children. I’m thrilled to share our vision for the house, but I also can’t deny the anxiety that comes with such a massive undertaking.

In addition to my online presence, I work part-time at my partner’s company, Drisag, where I handle marketing responsibilities. Balancing my job, content creation, renovation projects, household chores, and child-rearing can be overwhelming. Like many of you, I sometimes forget the little things—like sending a toilet roll to school for crafts or a book for jungle week. The pressure of societal expectations can be intense, leaving us feeling spread too thin.

If you’re a mom seeking solidarity and a sense of community, I invite you to join me on my Instagram page. I’m here for all the moms who worry whether they’re doing a good job. If you’re concerned, it means you care deeply, and that alone makes you a fantastic mom. Trust your instincts—you know your children best. Let’s navigate this journey together, with a good dose of humor and a lot of understanding.

Kind regards,

Britt Muyldermans

My Daughter gives me Strength Every Day

Maria

My name is Maria, I am 35 years old, and I can call myself not only a teacher and educator but also a proud mother of a wonderful daughter, Mia, who is already 11 years old. I am madly in love with this little person who has changed my life in such an incredible way. Becoming a mother is a true miracle that has completely transformed my understanding of happiness and love.

Motherhood has opened up a new world for me, filled with tenderness, care, and boundless joy. Every moment with my daughter becomes precious and unforgettable. But I especially cherish the breastfeeding times, which seem to be frozen in eternity. These moments of tenderness and closeness are a true precious gift. Motherhood teaches me to be stronger, more patient, and more compassionate. I am grateful for every smile, every squeak, and every moment spent with my daughter. She is my little joy, and I am proud of who we are becoming together. My daughter gives me strength every day.

In 2017, I completed my studies and earned a master’s degree in art education when my daughter was only three four old. Since then, I have worked for five years in a general education school as an art teacher, and now I work as a teacher in a kindergarten, where every day I can share my knowledge and inspire little creative minds. Besides my work, I have another passion – I am a brow artist. I believe that the ability to create beautiful brows is like an art that helps to highlight each woman’s individuality.

I was born and live in the amazing country of Estonia, but I dream of living in a place where summer never ends. I love traveling, learning about new cultures and traditions, rollerblading, and cycling. Music accompanies me everywhere: I sing, dance, and play the piano, enjoying every chord.

With my passion for life, I strive to share my experiences and joy with those around me. Because I believe that it doesn’t matter where you are, what matters is how you make life bright and memorable. Therefore, with the birth of my daughter, I have been running a blog on Instagram (since 2013), which serves as a kind of diary for me.
